Terms of Service
ScannerCam Light is a free, on-device document scanner for iOS and Android: scanning, editing, text recognition and storage all happen on your device, and it has no ads, no user accounts, and no tracking or analytics. A few optional features do contact third parties, and some of that contact is automatic rather than something you choose — the Privacy Policy describes every case. These terms govern your use of the app. They are written to be plain and short, but they are still a legal agreement between you and the developer of ScannerCam Light.
Effective date: 2026-09-08
Acceptance of these terms
By using ScannerCam Light you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
These terms apply together with the Privacy Policy, which explains what little data the app touches and why.
Licence to use the app
The developer of ScannerCam Light grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the app on devices you own or control, for your own lawful, personal or business purposes.
This licence does not give you any ownership in the app itself. You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or redistribute the app except to the extent applicable law expressly permits, and you may not remove or obscure any notices contained in it.
Your content
"Your content" means anything you scan, photograph, edit, store, export, or share using ScannerCam Light — including the resulting images, PDFs, and any text extracted from them by on-device OCR.
You are solely responsible for the documents you scan, store, and share with ScannerCam Light, for having the right to scan or copy them, and for your use complying with the laws that apply to you.
The developer of ScannerCam Light never sees, receives, or has access to your content. Everything happens on your device, so nothing you scan can be reviewed, moderated, or removed by the developer of ScannerCam Light — that responsibility stays with you.
No warranty
ScannerCam Light is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
The developer of ScannerCam Light does not warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or compatible with every device, nor that it will meet your particular requirements.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer of ScannerCam Light will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages, including but not limited to lost data or lost profits, arising out of or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, the app.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the total liability of the developer of ScannerCam Light for any claim arising out of or relating to the app is limited to the amount you have actually paid for the app, which for ScannerCam Light is normally nothing.
Data loss and backups
ScannerCam Light stores your documents only on your device, as files plus a local database. There is no cloud storage and no server-side copy — your documents are not backed up to any server by the app.
Uninstalling the app, clearing its data, or losing, resetting, or damaging your device will permanently destroy your documents. This cannot be undone, and the developer of ScannerCam Light has no way to recover anything for you.
Keep your own copies of anything you cannot afford to lose — for example by exporting important documents to another app, a computer, or a cloud service of your choosing before you uninstall the app, switch devices, or clear its data.
Accuracy of scanning and OCR
Edge detection, perspective correction, image enhancement, and text recognition (OCR) in ScannerCam Light are automated and imperfect. They can crop, distort, misread, or omit content, especially on poor-quality originals, unusual layouts, or handwriting. Text recognition also reads Latin-script text only — the alphabet used by English, Spanish, French and similar languages — so Chinese, Arabic and Cyrillic text is not recognised at all, and does not become searchable.
Output from these features must not be relied on for legal, medical, financial, or other consequential purposes without checking it against the original. Always verify a scanned or recognized document before you rely on it or send it to someone else.
Third-party services
ScannerCam Light does not hand out your data. There are no user accounts, you are never asked who you are, and the app holds no name, sign-in, advertising identifier, or profile for you — so it has no identity to give anyone. Nothing you scan is ever sent to any party named below, and nothing about you is ever sold, rented, or shared for advertising or profiling. The app does come into contact with a small number of independent third parties, each governed by its own terms and privacy practices that the developer of ScannerCam Light does not control. Some of that contact follows something you do; some of it is automatic. What each party can learn, and how, is set out here:
- Apple and Google distribute the app through their stores. Downloading it is between you and the store you used — ScannerCam Light takes no part in that and learns nothing about you from it. Where an optional in-app tip is offered, Apple processes the payment and receives whatever payment details you give Apple; the developer receives none of them, only Apple's aggregate, anonymous sales reporting. The app itself sends neither company anything that identifies you.
- Ko-fi and the Bitcoin network are optional donation routes, offered depending on your platform and app version. Tapping a Ko-fi link only opens your browser at Ko-fi's own page: the app tells Ko-fi nothing about you, and anything Ko-fi learns comes from your own visit and whatever you choose to give it there. A Bitcoin donation involves no request from the app at all — the address is shown on your device and nothing is transmitted. Bitcoin transactions are, however, recorded permanently on a public ledger and can be traced by anyone; that is a property of Bitcoin, not something the app affects either way.
- Cloudflare and GitHub are involved only in the optional feedback feature, and only in builds where it is enabled. Cloudflare receives your device's IP address — as any server does when your device contacts it — when the automatic verification challenge loads and when a message is submitted, along with an anti-abuse attestation that certifies the app is a genuine install rather than identifying you. GitHub receives the message you wrote and, only if you chose to enter one, your email address. Neither is told who you are by the app: an email you type is the only detail that can identify you, and it reaches them only because you chose to include it.
Read those third parties' own terms before using a feature that involves them; where the contact is automatic — the feedback-service check when the library screen opens, the verification challenge when the feedback form opens, and the App Store tip-options query when the support screen opens — it happens without a separate choice on your part. The developer of ScannerCam Light is not responsible for their acts, omissions, availability, or policies.
Tips and donations
ScannerCam Light is free to use in full. Depending on your platform and app version, you may optionally support the project through an in-app tip processed by Apple, through Ko-fi, or by sending Bitcoin to an address shown in the app — whichever of these options is offered to you.
Any tip or donation is entirely voluntary and non-refundable, and it does not unlock any feature, warranty, priority, or support obligation. It does not create a contract for goods or services beyond the goodwill it represents.
Acceptable use
You agree not to use ScannerCam Light to:
- Scan, store, or share content you do not have the right to scan, copy, or possess.
- Break any law that applies to you, including copyright, privacy, and data-protection law.
- Attempt to interfere with, disable, overload, or reverse engineer the app or its underlying libraries beyond what applicable law expressly permits.
- Misuse the feedback form to submit abusive, false, or malicious reports, or content you do not have the right to submit.
Indemnity
Subject to the mandatory rights described in "Your rights" below, and to the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to indemnify the developer of ScannerCam Light against claims, losses, and reasonable legal costs arising directly from your content or from your breach of these terms or of the law.
Termination
You may stop using ScannerCam Light at any time, including by uninstalling it — remember to export any documents you want to keep first, since uninstalling deletes them permanently.
The developer of ScannerCam Light may suspend or discontinue the app, or your ability to use particular features, at any time, for any reason, including if you breach these terms. Because the app runs on your device and is free, this will typically mean the app stops receiving updates rather than being remotely disabled.
Changes to these terms
The developer of ScannerCam Light may update these terms from time to time, for example to reflect a new feature or a change in applicable law. The effective date at the top of this document shows when the current version took effect.
You do not receive a separate notice when these terms change. The copy bundled inside the app reflects the version that was current when that release of ScannerCam Light was built; the current version is the one published on the ScannerCam Light website, and the effective date above shows which version you are reading. Continuing to use ScannerCam Light after a new version takes effect means you accept the updated terms; if you do not accept them, stop using the app.
Your rights
Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the consumer-protection law of your own country that cannot be excluded or limited by agreement. Where a clause above conflicts with such a mandatory right, the mandatory right prevails and the rest of these terms remain in effect.
